Scorpius Region

Scorpius and Antares

One of the more colorful regions of the sky!  Yellow, red and blue nebulosity come together around Rho Ophiuchi and Antares, a bright, beautiful yellow star.  Also clearly shown is the 'L' shaped Pipe Nebula (Barnard 59, 65-67, and 78), a series of dark dust clouds only 600-700 light years away.
It's actually in the same complex of objects as Antares and Rho Ophiuchi to its west.
The Pipe is easily seen in dark skies with binoculars.

Taken at Texas Star Party, May, 2002. 10 min. @ 200mm f/4. Nikon F2 piggybacked on LX200.  Guided with STV.  Kodak Royal Gold 400 film. Processing includes levels adjustment, color balance, and enlargement.
